Athlete of the Month:
Diane Lawrence
Last October, when Diane Lawrence’s
60th birthday was approaching, she knew she had to do
something special to mark the occasion. Sky diving was considered
along with some other options, but a friend nearly half her age was
talking up triathlon so Diane decided that would be her goal. The
race had an ocean swim and the surf was pretty big that day. Diane
stood on shore and faced, what she calls, her “weakest link” – the
ocean swim. She was a bit unnerved watching a few athletes get
pulled from the water, but was determined and said to herself
“that’s not gonna be me”.
Diane Lawrence wouldn’t let any of her friends or
her daughter, a student at Boston Conservatory of Music who flew in
for the day, wish her a happy birthday before she finished – it was
her gift to herself. But once across the line, they all gathered to
sing her Happy Birthday.
Diane had a ton of fun. She says she “couldn’t
wipe the grin off her face all day” and she’s never looked at her
time, it’s “totally irrelevant”. Diane was once a professional
dancer, working her art in ballet, jazz, and musical theater, but
now, as a hypnotherapist, she helps marathoners, cancer patients,
and HIV patients among others. Diane, like so many of us, is hooked
on triathlon. She’s signed up to race the Strawberry Fields
Triathlon on March 26th, and acquired a training program form TRIATHLETIX
built specifically for that race. We’re honored to help with what
will surely be another day of constant grinning.
