Athlete of the Month:  Nick Downey Nick Downey

Nick Downey completed his first Ironman last weekend in Wisconsin, crossing the soggy finish line in 12:05. To fully appreciate his great accomplishment, you first need to know a little something about Nick.

Nick is a very analytical guy. He doesn't go to the grocery store without knowing how long it took him and what his average heart rate was during the experience. So naturally, he approached his first IM adventure in a very scientific manner. He had a time goal from the minute he filled out the application and throughout his training, he measured his progress down to the heart beat.

His toughest challenge was the swim for two reasons:   1) it was his weakest discipline and 2) getting pool time uninterrupted by old ladies on their noodles was quite a task. But he persisted and soon found that he actually enjoyed his swim workouts, at least some of them.  All his run training was done with his dog, so he now has the most aerobically fit dog in the mid-west.

He was totally prepared. Every detail had been addressed and he was strong and confident. And then he woke up to unexpected conditions on race morning. The winds were very stiff and by the time he got on the bike, heavy rain became a factor. But Nick proved his mettle as an athlete: he threw away all the science and raced with his heart. He stayed positive all day long, solving unforeseen problems as they arose and moving on. When he crossed the finish line, a little later than his original plan called for, he rightfully felt the pride that comes with a job well done.

Within a couple of hours he was planning which IM he would do next to prove to himself that, given less than extreme conditions, he could meet his time goal.

A hearty Congratulations to Nick on his successful Ironman adventure.
